Picture This: Jazz photographer Herman Leonard, whose coverage reaches from the bebop years of the ‘40s and ‘50s to the present, from the jazz clubs of New York’s 52nd Street to the jazz concerts of the ‘90s, is having a major Los Angeles exhibition at the Fahey/Klein Gallery. The show, titled “Jazz Memories,” includes photographs from Leonard’s first publication, “The Eye of Jazz,” and his latest book of photographs, “Jazz Memories.” Leonard’s dark, moody, immediately recognizable style reflects his fascination with the music and its players.
“Jazz is a unique form of music,” Leonard says, “in that it requires the performers to create their parts as they play them. . . . To be present when the artist actually creates his work is an astonishing privilege.”
