Fairfax Avenue Receives Grant for Improvements

A two-block stretch of Fairfax Avenue will undergo $300,000 worth of transit-related improvements thanks to a grant from a nonprofit agency, a spokesman for City Councilman Mike Feuer said this week.

Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative--a group formed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Mayor Richard Riordan’s office--gave Fairfax one of four such grants based on its status as a transit-dependent neighborhood, said Erik Story, a legislative deputy for Feuer who coordinated the grant application.

Story said a 14-member board of local residents and business people has been appointed by Feuer to decide how to allocate the money for improvements such as bus stop benches, decorative lighting or landscaping on Fairfax between Beverly Boulevard and Rosewood Avenue.

Story said the grant is “supposed to be a vehicle to get some quick, visible improvements on the street.” He said he thought the changes should spur further investment and improvements in the area.
