President Fidel Castro’s Communist Party has picked a new, smaller Central Committee whose prime task will be to build ideological defenses and ensure that the party does not suffer the same fate as communism in the former Soviet Bloc.

Castro’s brother Raul Castro, the party’s second secretary, told the Fifth Party Congress in Havana that the new Central Committee will be reduced to 150 members from 225 members.

Raul Castro’s remarks, made late Thursday after the 1,500 delegates to the congress cast their votes for the new committee, were broadcast on state television Friday.

Raul Castro said the new committee will ensure the party is immune from what he called “ideological viruses.”
