$175,00 From Foundation Allows City to Meet Payroll
A private foundation controlled by controversial developer Irving Moskowitz has pumped $175,000 into the Hawaiian Gardens municipal coffers, allowing the city to meet its last payroll.
“We pleaded with Mr. Moskowitz directly,” Mayor Lupe Cabrera said of the philanthropist who also owns the city’s bingo parlor and is seeking to build a card club there. “The Moskowitz people understand our plight.”
Until payments ceased in July, which caused the city to dismiss its police force and slash city staff by more than half, the foundation had sent the city $200,000 a month for more than a year.
The mayor said he did not know if regular payments would resume or if layoffs will continue. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Hawaiian Gardens City Council today are expected to formally approve an agreement for the Sheriff’s Department to provide police services starting Nov. 1.
