25 Islamic Preachers Die as Tornado Hits
Rescue workers said 25 Islamic preachers at a riverbank prayer meeting were killed and another 5,000 people injured when a tornado tore through a 3-square-mile area north of Dhaka. The government would only confirm a lower toll, saying that at least 15 people were killed and 1,000 injured. The tornado stayed on the ground for half an hour Sunday, blowing away tin roofs, trees and electricity poles near Tongi, an industrial town about 10 miles north of the capital. Most of the dead were killed by flying debris, survivors said.
