Opponents of New School District to Give Reasons

The ABC Unified School District will hold a town hall meeting tonight to discuss its opposition to the creation of a proposed district in Lakewood.

ABC Unified stands to lose five of its 29 schools if the Lakewood district is created. ABC board President Craig McCormick said Hawaiian Gardens would be divided into geographically separate areas, cut off from the majority of the district in Cerritos, Artesia and Norwalk in what he called a violation of state law.

McCormick said the district wants to provide information about the school district formation process that the Lakewood proposal must negotiate.

“I will explain why the board voted unanimously against the Lakewood proposal and why in our opinion it does not meet the required legal criteria,” said McCormick.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Willow Elementary School, 11733 E. 205th St., Lakewood.
