Thirteen Orange County high schools were selected Tuesday as candidates for as much as $7 million in state funds to help improve campus technology.

Education officials randomly picked 216 California schools, the first crop to be eligible for about $100 million in state grants this year through the Digital High School program.

High schools statewide are expected to divide $500 million over five years, officials said. The schools chosen this week must now apply for the money by proposing campus technology programs. For each application approved, the school will receive $300 per student.

“We’re very excited about this,” said Camille Dolas, administrator for educational technology at the Anaheim Union School District, where three campuses were selected.

Dolas said those three--Loara High in Anaheim, John F. Kennedy High in La Palma and Cypress High--will apply for the state money to expand their Internet access, implement distance-learning programs and buy laser discs, videos and other multimedia equipment used in English and foreign-language studies.

The other 10 Orange County high schools selected Tuesday are: Tustin, Dana Hills, Buena Park, Irvine, Costa Mesa, La Quinta in Westminster, Rancho Alamitos and Pacifica in Garden Grove, and Valencia and El Dorado in Placentia.
