Exhibits, Events Explore Holocaust

“Anne Frank in the World: 1929-1945,” a collection of photographs and articles examining the life of the young girl and the effects of racism on contemporary society, will be on display at Karpeles Manuscript Museum in Santa Barbara through Nov. 16.

The traveling exhibit, organized by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, documents the story of the Frank family who hid from the Nazis in an office warehouse attic. They were captured and died in concentration camps except for Anne’s father, Otto Frank.

The exhibit will be open to the public Monday-Wednesday, 3-6 p.m.; Thursday, 3-8 p.m.; Friday, 3-5:30 p.m.; and Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets for adults are $5, seniors $3, and students, donation. Call (805) 963-4408 for reservations; some tickets will be sold at the door.

There will be a number of events at the museum and throughout Santa Barbara County related to the Holocaust and the issue of discrimination. Reservations for most events at the Karpeles museum are being handled by the Arlington Theatre.

Exhibits

* Paintings by artist Mina Cohen, inspired by her mother’s experiences in the Nazi concentration camp of Struthof, Poland, will be on display at Frameworks Gallery, 131 E. De La Guerra St., Santa Barbara. There will be an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit will run through Oct. 25. Free. Information: (805) 965-1812.

* Stephen Harrison’s photographs of the people of Tibet will be on display in the show “Whispered Prayers” at Sullivan Goss Fine Prints and Rare Books, 7 E. Anapamu St., Santa Barbara. * A collection of documents, photos and memorabilia detailing the Danish resistance to the Nazis will be on display at the Elverhoj Museum, 1624 Elverhoj Way, Solvang. A related exhibit, on loan from the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, will document the Danish rescue of Jews. Both collections will be on display from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 12-16. Free. * Steve Gilbar will share short stories by writers who have won the Anne Frank Prize for Literature at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Center Stage Theater, on the second level of the Paseo Nuevo shopping center, Chapala and De La Guerra streets, Santa Barbara. $10.
