‘Acme in the Sky’ Tests Some Limits

Share

John, Paul, George and Ringo don’t make any appearances in the Acme Comedy Theatre’s new Saturday revue, “Acme in the Sky With Diamonds.” Even more disappointing, this generally amusing current bill features few real gems.

In “Voyagers,” Jeff Lewis is the commanding astronaut on a mission to Mars who has chosen another astronaut (Todd Rohrbacher) to accompany him on a two-month mission believing that they are both gay. Jamie Kaler demonstrates a spectacular fall in the slapstick piece “Dating Pains,” about an unbelievably clumsy man on a date with an unsuspecting woman (Erin Ehrlich). “Eye in the Sky” lampoons the inane television news coverage of nonevents with Kale, Jackson Douglas, Alex Borstein, Carolyn Hennesy and Jeff Lewis. “Jewel of Denial” has Ehrlich and Borstein taking on the suspected sexual preferences of a famous talk-show host for nearly libelous, wicked humor.

Other skits tend to offer a singular idea stretched beyond the limits of wisdom and good taste, such as Stefane Zamorano and Lewis in “Single & Sassy,” when an over-sexed swinging single kindergarten teacher attempts to seduce her date. “Queen for a Day” has Kaler and Rohrbacher performing a cheesy song and dance routine as entertainment hosts on the Queen Mary.

Of course, the bill will change and by the end of the run, the hits may outnumber the duds, but for now that’s simply not the case.
