Pier Ceremony Postponed; Facility to Be Reopened
The renovated Venice Pier, whose scheduled reopening Thursday was postponed while a resident sought a temporary restraining order, will open Saturday morning, officials said.
Boston Dawna, a Venice resident and Neighborhood Watch captain, said she sought an order to prevent the pier from being opened to the public 24 hours a day, charging that late-night access would bring gang members to the pier.
A Santa Monica Superior Court judge denied the restraining order Thursday, noting that a 1989 city ordinance required that piers be closed between midnight and 5 a.m., said Assistant City Atty. Mark Brown.
The $4.5-million restoration of the pier, closed since 1988, took exactly one year to complete, said Kathleen Chan, project manager for the city Department of Recreation and Parks.
