Update--The American Basketball League touches down on Southern California’s sports scene tonight. This is good news for the Long Beach StingRays, who have been in training camp since Sept. 3, waiting to play a real basketball game. The bad news: Their first game is against the Lasers, who Wednesday night looked like an ABL juggernaut in burying Seattle, 90-70. San Jose’s Jennifer Azzi shut down rookie Kate Starbird in her pro debut and tonight probably will be matched against Long Beach’s Beverly Williams. Azzi had 10 points, eight assists, three steals and a block while holding Starbird to three-for-11 shooting. Long Beach will lean heavily on the league’s No. 1 draft pick, Yolanda Griffith, plus Venus Lacy, Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil and guards Williams and Andrea Nagy. Sheri Sam led San Jose on Wednesday with 23 points on a night when seven Lasers played 20 or more minutes. Said Azzi afterward: “We have enough players for two teams.”
