Souper ideas can come from anywhere. Even Andy Warhol.

Thirty-five years after Warhol painted his first Campbell’s tomato soup can, he continues to inspire creativity.

On Tuesday, Campbell’s Soup Co. will honor the legend of Warhol and the 100th anniversary of the soup by announcing its Art of Soup contest winners.

In addition receiving to cash prizes--the grand prize is $10,000--and stock in the soup company, the winning artists’ works will be displayed, alongside Warhol’s original art, in the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

Entries were submitted in several categories and three levels--professional, amateur and youth.

Among the more interesting entries was a footstool by Katherine Frierson of Birmingham, Ala. Frierson decided on the stool, which has legs made from PVC pipe and papier-ma^che, because she needed one for her kitchen. Frierson says she likes to create illusions, so she used a trompe l’oeil technique on her entry.

Ann Cantor of Sarasota, Fla., sculpted a lamp from stained glass. Cantor, 53, whose entry is her second attempt with stained glass, has a background in graphic art and jewelry design.

Perhaps the most unusual entry belongs to Robert Merryweather of Playa del Rey, Calif., who made a robot of soup cans, labels and soup spoons.

A true souper hero.
