A bus carrying a high school volleyball team home from a match collided with a tractor-trailer on a highway in the mountains of western North Carolina, killing two people, police said. The truck driver was charged with murder and driving while impaired.

The crash Thursday night on U.S. Highway 64 outside Franklin killed the bus driver, Paul Maliska, 48, and one of his nine passengers, Carla Edwards, 16, the Highway Patrol said today. Both victims were from Hayesville.

The tractor-trailer was traveling down a steep hill when it crossed the center line and collided with the bus, Trooper C.D. Jenkins said.
