Gardiner Leads SCC to 2-1 Win Over Cal Baptist

Jamie Gardiner scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute as Southern California College defeated Cal Baptist, 2-1, in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer game Saturday at Cal Baptist.

Polly Gifford scored the tying goal for the Vanguards with a header in the 80th minute.

The Vanguards (12-4, 5-2), set a school record for most wins (12). The previous record (11) was set in 1995.

In women’s tennis at the Blue-Gold Fall Invitational:

UC Irvine freshman wins--Darian Chappell topped Tulsa’s Monica Poveda in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, to win the singles championship at the UC Irvine tennis stadium.

Poveda rallied from 3-4 to win the second and force a third set, but Chappell prevailed, 6-2, in the third, winning her first collegiate tournament.

In the University of Arkansas Cross-Country Invitational:

UC Irvine women place fifth--Jamie Blair finished 19th in 17 minutes 49 seconds over 5,000 meters and Allyson Kulak finished 22nd in 17:53 to lead the Anteaters.

UC Irvine men finish 10th--Jorge Gutierrez finished 52nd in 31:37 over 8,000 meters.

In the Triton Cross-Country Invitational:

Cal State Fullerton men place third--Francisco Vazquez placed 10th in 25:43.7 over 8,000 meters to lead the Titans. Robert Seaman finished 22nd in 26:27.7 over 8,000 meters to lead Concordia to a 12th-place finish in San Diego.

UC Irvine women place sixth--Claire Tillolson finished 32nd in 19:41.9 over 5,000 meters to lead the Anteaters. Concordia finished seventh behind Rachel Lafady 19th-place finish in 19:04.4. The Cal State Fullerton women finished eighth, led by Sarah MacDougall, who placed eighth in 15:31.2. Dana Daniel finished 75th in 20:25.7 for Chapman, which finished 14th.

In the Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Cal State Fullerton 3, Boise State 1--LaCretia Smith had 20 kills to lead the Titans, who defeated Boise State, 12-15, 15-10, 15-8, 15-5.

Katie Crawford had 17 kills for the Titans (12-10, 4-4).

In the Northern California men’s water polo tournament:

Stanford 9, UC Irvine 8 (OT)--Layne Beaubian scored the winning goal in sudden death for fourth-ranked Stanford in the quarterfinals.

The Cardinal battled back from a four-goal deficit with less than three minutes to play in regulation.

UC Irvine defeated UC Davis, 13-10, in the first round.
