Rip-Off Roundup
Local scam artists may be entering a busy season. The heavy rains expected this winter could be a boon for charlatans posing as respectable roofers. Though concerns about El Nino seem legitimate and roof repairs by reputable contractors could be a smart move by homeowners, law enforcement authorities warn: Buyer beware!
The Cons
In addition to seasonal rip-offs, local police warn that some cons are perennials: collecting cash deposits from numerous renters for the same home, pretending to be legal consultants, telephone “deals.” Topping the list is the stealing of credit cards and other identification. “The No. 1 thing is probably the identity theft,” said LAPD Det. Rene Lacasse, above, who supervises a consumer fraud special unit.
The Victims
Almost anyone can be conned. Especially vulnerable are elderly citizens intimidated by aggressive sales pitches and people of any age looking for dream deals. “There’s a little bit of greed on the part of the victim,” Lacasse said. “They think they’re getting something for nothing.”
Top Tips
Deputy Dist. Atty. Thomas A. Papageorge, in charge of the consumer protection division, offered three tips: 1) Be skeptical of sweet deals 2) Do your homework and avoid quick decisions 3) Complain effectively, starting with the firm in question. The Los Angeles County Department of Consumer Affairs is at (213) 974-1452.
