Meeting Set for Today on Future of College

Students and neighbors of Pierce College will have an opportunity to share their views about the future of the school at a special community meeting on campus today.

Pierce College President Bing Inocencio and Community College Board President Althea Baker will co-host the community discussion at 5 p.m. during a regularly scheduled meeting of the board.

Among the topics to be discussed are the future of the Pierce College farm and agriculture department as well as other campus open-space and master plan issues, officials said.

In August, the Pierce College Council, a group of students, faculty and other employees who advise Inocencio on educational and fiscal issues, voted to revive plans to build a golf driving range on school property.

Farm supporters launched a campaign this fall to enlist community and political backing, raise money and have the area declared an agricultural preserve.

City Councilwoman Laura Chick, who represents the area, said she requested the community meeting after receiving numerous calls from constituents concerned about the future of Pierce’s remaining 240 acres of open space.

“I feel that it is vital for Pierce College to involve the community in the early stages of facilitating their master plan,” Chick said. “I am hopeful that this two-way dialogue with the key decision-makers ensures serious consideration of the community’s needs.”

Community college officials said those interested in speaking at the meeting are encouraged to sign up in advance by calling (213) 891-2184 before 10 this morning. The meeting will be held at the Pierce College Campus Center, 6201 Winnetka Ave., in Woodland Hills.
