Spotlight: Enron Unit to Offer Promo for Free Electricity

An Enron Corp. unit said it plans to offer two weeks of free electricity to Californians as it tries to lure residential customers away from the utilities they have traditionally used once the state’s electricity market deregulates. On Jan. 1, the state will open the $21-billion California electricity market to competition for the first time. More than 100 companies have registered to sell power in the state, and the rivalry is expected to be fierce. “This is going to be circus time,” one analyst said.
