Grant to Enhance School’s Math, Science Curriculum

Culver City Middle School prevailed over a field of 75 applicants to win a grant from Cal State Dominguez Hills for enhancing math and science curriculum, a school official said this week.

Principal Diawn Stanley said the $30,000 grant and $9,000 in matching funds from the Culver City Education Foundation will be used to improve the school’s focus on environmental issues.

The grant proposal submitted by teachers Kay Alderson, John Healy and Diane Johnson emphasized the use of La Ballona Creek as a teaching tool, Stanley said. The creek, which borders the campus, is used to teach students about ecology, including water quality and animal and plant life.

Stanley said the grant will be used to pay for scientific instruments, field trips to other wetland areas and professional development for teachers in science and math.

Under the new curriculum, students will create a Web site about their findings in La Ballona Creek, Stanley said, and will use computers to analyze samples they take from the creek and Santa Monica Bay, among other projects.
