Cold Weather Program for Homeless Finds New Site

Long Beach’s cold weather program for the homeless has found a new site in the former Navy Shipyard.

“We are very happy with the shipyard site and hope we can get final approval from the Navy,” said New Image Emergency Shelter director Brenda Wilson. “This facility will allow us to be open from 4 p.m. until 8 a.m.”

Wilson said the program began seeking alternative sites after Gov. Pete Wilson vetoed a bill that would have allowed it to use a National Guard armory.

After the governor reversed his position, the Long Beach armory imposed restrictions, including prohibiting the use of the building before 7:30 p.m. and requiring that all 150 cots be removed each day and stored at a separate facility.
