A Van Nuys woman who pushed her son out of harm’s way was seriously injured Friday morning when she was struck by a school bus in a crosswalk, authorities said.

The accident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. when Ana Maria Picolomini, 46, of Van Nuys, was walking with her son eastbound across Sepulveda Boulevard at Valerio Street, California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Jensen said. A Laidlaw school bus carrying children hit her while making a left turn onto southbound Sepulveda Boulevard. None of the children on the bus were injured.

Picolomini saw the bus coming and pushed her son out of the way, Jensen said. The child was not injured. Picolomini suffered multiple fractures and was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center in serious condition, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said.
