Apprentice Jockey Injured in Spill
Apprentice jockey J.C. Gonzalez will be sidelined indefinitely after breaking a leg and his pelvis in a spill during the fourth race Friday at Santa Anita.
Riding longshot Don Pasqual in the $10,000 claimer, Gonzalez, 22, was thrown when the 5-year-old horse broke his left knee just inside the quarter pole in the six-furlong race.
Gonzalez, a native of Mexico who has ridden 10 winners in the Oak Tree meeting, was taken to nearby Arcadia Methodist Hospital. He was listed in stable condition late Friday afternoon and was to remain there overnight for observation, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Don Pasqual, making his first start since being claimed for $10,000 by trainer Barry Abrams on Aug. 31 at Del Mar, was put down.
