Beach Expected to Reopen After 20,000-Gallon Sewage Spill
A one-mile stretch of beach from Tuna Canyon Road to Sunset Boulevard may reopen today after a sewage spill of up to 20,000 gallons.
The spill began Saturday when the pumping station near Coastline Drive and Pacific Coast Highway became blocked, said Jack Petralia, director of environmental protection at the county Department of Health Services.
John Redner, sewage system manager for the county Sanitation Districts, said the blockage was caused by construction materials discarded by a contractor “who was possibly not taking the necessary precautions.”
The blocked sewage overflowed into a storm drainage ditch and then into the ocean, he said.
Petralia said that an average of half a dozen such spills occur per year. This was the fourth county spill this year, he said.
“If everything is clean, we should reopen the beaches Tuesday,” he said.
