Halloween Pet Protection

Share

Because some pets fall prey to pranksters and others who steal and harm them during Halloween, authorities recommend that pet owners keep their animals inside homes or garages. If left outdoors, keep pets behind a secure fence and locked gate. Some other tips:

* If a pet must be left outside, make sure it has a correct identification tag and current license (for dogs), in case the animal runs off and ends up in a shelter.

* If pets are kept indoors, keep them in a bedroom or other secure part of the house while answering the door for trick or treaters.

* Most candy is harmful to animals, especially chocolate, which can cause serious illness or death. Give animals pet biscuits instead of candy.

* Plastic candy wrappers can also be a problem if digested and can cause internal blockages and other related problems.

* Because they attract curious pets, keep burning candles, even inside of pumpkins, in safe locations. Try using disposable glow sticks to brighten a jack-o’-lantern.

* If you put a costume on your pet, make sure elastic fittings are not too tight and that vision is not obstructed. Don’t keep your pet in costume for an extended period.
