Re “Hernandez Question Splits Angry Council,” Oct. 25: It is a shame that Nate Holden has to pull the race card. What council members Laura Chick and Mike Feuer did was over conscience. They could not stand by and be part of the council’s silence. Instead of engaging in a thoughtful discussion in this matter of Mike Hernandez, Holden sees fit to say that their call for his resignation is tinged with racism.

If a city as diverse as L.A., and one still healing from racial divisions, lacks the sensible, rational, intelligent political leadership necessary to guide it into the 21st century, then shame on the voters of Los Angeles.

* Who does Holden think he is? Calling other members of the Los Angeles City Council “KKK members” for their admonishing of a felony drug addict? Such remarks are inflammatory and racist. Perhaps the demand for a recall should now include two names--Hernandez and Holden!

* As a Hispanic member of the community, I would like to say how ashamed I am that someone like Mike Hernandez is representing me. He should do the right thing and resign.

I’m tired of people not accepting responsibility for their own actions, but rather hiding behind the color of their skin. Hernandez is an educated adult who knows what he did and should accept the consequences. As far as I’m concerned he doesn’t deserve to be in public office.

* It seems that the campaign to break up the city of Los Angeles is in full swing and that Hernandez and Holden are the unofficial poster boys for the effort. The cries of racism and general lunacy never fail to amaze!
