Caltrans Completes Landslide Prevention Work

Share

Caltrans finished removing a potential landslide Wednesday that might have blocked Pacific Coast Highway during the predicted El Nino storms this winter.

A southbound lane of Chautauqua Boulevard, which had been closed to allow dirt removal, will reopen today, and Caltrans will install drainage pipes and landscape the area over the coming weeks, said Caltrans senior construction engineer Scott McKenzie.

Originally due to be completed by mid-November, the project is running ahead of schedule. “We had good weather and were able to make good progress,” McKenzie said. Caltrans has been using up to 30 trucks a day, six days a week, to move about 3,400 truckloads of dirt to Malibu, he said. There, the dirt is helping shore up Kanan Dume Road.

Work began last September on the cliffs above Will Rogers Beach, after the state had condemned two eroding hilltop properties for $5 million.
