The jury deciding the fate of British nanny Louise Woodward, charged with murdering a baby, ended their second day of deliberations Wednesday without a verdict.

The nine women and three men on the panel did ask to rehear the testimony of Dr. Joseph Madsen, the neurosurgeon who operated on nearly 9-month-old Matthew Eappen. They asked that the portion of his testimony dealing with fluids spurting from the baby’s brain when Madsen first punctured the dura, or brain covering, be reread.

Madsen, a prosecution witness, said under defense questioning that the color of the fluid that first squirted from the baby’s head might indicate an injury healing. Defense lawyers have argued that the fatal injuries occurred weeks earlier.

The jury must decide one of three possible verdicts: guilty of first- or second-degree murder, or acquittal. Prosecutors have tried to portray the 19-year-old nanny as a frustrated and angry teenager who violently shook a crying and collicky Matthew Eappen.
