School District Hires Firm to Oversee Improvements
The Beverly Hills Unified School District has hired a management firm to supervise $77 million in school improvements approved by voters under a bond measure. Work is slated to begin this summer.
Assistant Supt. Peter Hardash said that many schools were built in the 1920s and ‘30s, and have leaking roofs, old plumbing and poor lighting. The schools also need seismic retrofitting, he said.
City voters approved the bond issue in 1993 to upgrade the schools, he said. A $3.4-million management contract with PCM 3, a Montrose firm, has been awarded for the length of the project.
Leroy Maxwell, senior project director for PCM 3, said the construction will proceed while the schools are occupied, with students relocated as various areas are worked on.
The first project will be fixing El Rodeo elementary school’s leaking roof, Hardash said.
“We have four elementary schools and one high school,” he said. “All need help.”
