Man Critically Hurt After Gang Beating
A 21-year-old Oxnard man who was beaten because he would not hand over his bicycle to a pack of marauding youths remained in critical condition Thursday night at Ventura County Medical Center.
Oxnard police say Gregorio Lopez Cruz was pushing his bicycle with two friends near 3rd Street and Bonita Avenue late Wednesday when six to eight men and boys between 16 and 20 years old demanded his bicycle.
When Cruz refused, the pack began attacking him with chunks of concrete and wooden planks before making off with the bicycle.
After searching the area, police arrested Davey Marcellano, 18, of Oxnard. The bicycle and the other suspects have not been found.
Cruz remains in intensive care at the Ventura County Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said.
Marcellano is being held in County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, a spokeswoman for the facility said.
