TIMES STAFF WRITER

The Automobile Club of Southern California has produced a new series of travel planners for popular destinations in California and the West, replacing the chunky book so familiar to AAA members.

The “Guide To” series of pocket-size publications combines a detailed map of the area covered with destination and lodging information and notes on recreational opportunities.

The Auto Club has eight guides available: Central and Southern California wineries, the Colorado River, Death Valley National Park, the Eastern Sierra, “Indian Country,” the San Bernardino Mountains, San Diego and Yosemite National Park. Guides to Northern California wineries and the Mother Lode will be released later this month. A guide to Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks is due early next year.

The guides are free to members at district offices and cost $3.95 each in bookstores.
