MTA Honors Bus Driver for Actions After Gang Shooting
When three pistol shots were fired on an MTA bus recently, leaving a passenger wounded, the gang member accused of the shooting ran out the back door. Other gang members tried to board the bus, but the quick-thinking driver quickly shut the door and drove away.
’ The driver, Leelen Porter, drove the frightened passengers to a safe location where the wounded passenger could be taken to a hospital.
Porter, 43, was given a commendation last week for his quick actions at Vermont and Slauson avenues.
“Leelen Porter put the safety of his passengers first on Aug. 13 when he responded instantly to a very serious situation,” said Metropolitan Transportation Authority official Ellen Levine.
