New Fire Prevention Program Targets Young Schoolchildren
A pilot fire prevention program designed for early elementary school students was introduced to teachers from the Long Beach Unified School District on Tuesday.
“One of our students lost their house in a fire last year and that drove the point home to teachers,” said Judi McEachen, principal of John Burroughs Elementary School.
The Learn Not to Burn program is being brought to the schools through the Long Beach Fire Department, financed by an $8,500 grant from Chevron and the National Fire Protection Assns.
The program features a variety of classroom activities, including a video in which Sparky the Fire Dog teaches the ABCs of fire safety, and students are taught a song about the importance of smoke alarms.
The program will be expanded to dozens of elementary schools next year, said Donna Griggs, a Fire Department public education officer.
