Spotlight: Gov. Wilson Vetoes Overtime Pay Bill

Share

As expected, Gov. Pete Wilson vetoed a bill that would have required some employers to pay overtime to workers who put in more than eight hours in a day. The bill, by state Sen. Hilda Solis (D-El Monte), was an attempt to reverse an Industrial Welfare Commission decision that required employers to pay overtime only after 40 hours of work, rather than on a daily basis. The IWC changes, which take effect Jan. 1, will apply only to workers not covered by other agreements such as contracts.
