Taliban, Opposition Battle for Key City

Taliban warplanes bombed the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif as fighting erupted around the opposition stronghold and de facto capital for a second day, aid workers said. The Taliban army, which controls the southern two-thirds of the country and aspires to turn Afghanistan into a strict Islamic state, is battling a northern-based opposition coalition on at least four different fronts. Artillery guns fired several shells a minute around Mazar-i-Sharif, the aid workers said.
