Tustin Unified Adds 2 Elementary Schools

The Tustin Unified School District this week opened two elementary schools, including one that had its doors shut for nearly 20 years.

The schools, Peters Canyon Elementary and Guinn Foss Elementary, are needed to accommodate enrollment growth and class-size reduction, officials said.

Enrollment in the Tustin district is growing at about 7% a year, making it one of the fastest growing districts in Orange County, officials said.

The $7-million Peters Canyon School, at 26900 Peters Canyon Road, greeted about 325 students Wednesday, and will ultimately serve as many as 650 students in the Tustin Ranch area. The school features a media center, video production studio, amphitheater and other state-of-the-art technology.

Guinn Foss School, at 18492 Vanderlip Ave., was built in 1957 and closed in 1978 because of declining enrollment. The district spent about $1 million for a complete refurbishment of the campus.
