Fedorov Reportedly Seeking Trade
Detroit Red Wing center Sergei Fedorov reportedly has asked for a trade from the defending Stanley Cup champions. NHL sources said Fedorov requested a trade Aug. 26 and then again last week, Booth News Service reported. Red Wing General Manager Ken Holland has declined to elaborate on the progress of negotiations with Fedorov’s agent, Michael Barnett.

Pittsburgh Penguin star right wing Jaromir Jagr is reportedly close to signing a new multi-year contract with the team expected to be worth about $49 million over seven seasons. Jagr, 25, has two years left on his current contract worth about $5 million annually. . . . Outside bidders are being sought to purchase the Edmonton Oilers after owner Peter Pocklington became frustrated by the lack of a bid for the team from local interests. Pocklington has said that local bidders would be given 30 days after filing of an outside bid to purchase the team for $70 million. At least two groups from Houston have expressed interest in buying the team and moving it to Texas. . . . New York Islander owner John O. Pickett Jr. said Thursday he has signed a letter of intent to sell the embattled franchise to a group headed by Phoenix Coyote co-owner Steven M. Gluckstern. . . . The Florida Panthers signed Scott Mellanby to a four-year contract and made him team captain. . . . The Boston Bruins signed 6-foot-7 center Joel Prpic to a two-year contract.
