Banks Gains 314 Yards to Lead Iowa Over Tulsa

Iowa Coach Hayden Fry didn’t have too much to say about Tavian Banks’ record-setting rushing performance, but Tulsa Coach Dave Radar sure did.

Banks, breaking off one long run after another, set an Iowa single-game rushing mark with 314 yards Saturday to pace the 18th-ranked Hawkeyes to a 54-16 victory over Tulsa at Iowa City, Iowa.

“Just a word for the rest of the Big Ten: Tavian Banks is better than Sedrick Shaw,” Radar said, referring to Iowa’s all-time leading rusher. “All the question marks are out of there.

“With all respect for Sedrick Shaw . . . Tavian Banks is the best running back I’ve seen since Barry Sanders.”

Fry said Banks’ performance “speaks for itself” although he added, “The quality of opposition is going to change.”

Banks said he wanted to win and do well for his uncle, Dino Banks of Rock Island, Ill., who died a week ago after contracting HIV.

Banks, who ran for a career-best 203 yards last week in a win over Northern Iowa, also had touchdown runs of 71, 14, 14 and 23 yards as the Hawkeyes (2-0) avenged last year’s 27-20 loss to Tulsa. Tulsa fell to 0-2.

Banks broke Ed Podolak’s record of 286 yards set in 1968. Podolak, who works as Iowa’s TV analyst, said, “It was broken by the best I’ve ever seen.”

NO. 1 PENN STATE 52, TEMPLE 10

Last week Penn State did it in the air. This week the Nittany Lions did it on the ground--with a wide receiver, no less.

Chafie Fields, who shifted from tailback to wide receiver this spring, had two touchdowns on reverses for the Nittany Lions at State College, Pa.

Fields had 90 yards rushing, nine more than Curtis Enis, who crossed the 2,000-yard career mark with 81 yards on the ground.

In beating Pittsburgh, 34-17, last week, Mike McQueary threw for a school-record 366 yards. This week he was 10 for 19 for 158 yards and two touchdowns before being pulled after three quarters for redshirt sophomore Kevin Thompson.

NO. 9 OHIO STATE 44, BOWLING GREEN 13

Michael Wiley scored two touchdowns, including a 100-yard kickoff return, and David Boston caught two touchdown passes for Ohio State (2-0) at Columbus, Ohio.

The victory was Ohio State’s 17th in a row over an in-state college. The last loss was in 1921 to Oberlin.

“I asked John Cooper at the end of the game if we could take some of his fifth-teamers,” Blackney said.

NO. 21 MICH.ST. 51, MEMPHIS 21

For the second consecutive game, the Spartans led 42-0 at halftime and then coasted to victory at East Lansing, Mich.

Todd Schultz threw three touchdown passes in a 28-point first quarter as Michigan State started 2-0 for the first time since 1983.

A week after grabbing seven turnovers, the defense was stingy again, holding the Tigers (1-2) to 13 yards in the first half and keeping them from crossing midfield.

NORTHWESTERN 24, DUKE 20

Brian Musso caught a 74-yard touchdown pass and later set up the winning score with a fourth-down reception as Northwestern (2-1) rallied twice and beat Duke (0-2) at Evanston, Ill.

After Musso’s 32-yard catch on a pass from Tim Hughes went to the Duke one, Adrian Autry carried for the touchdown with 3:43 left, putting Northwestern ahead and sending the Blue Devils to their 15th straight loss--the longest skid in Division I-A.

Duke hasn’t won since beating Wake Forest on Oct. 28, 1995.

Duke, which lost starting quarterback Bobby Campbell and then backup David Green because of knee injuries, led 13-3 at halftime and again 20-17 with 6:45 left to play.

Musso, a senior, finished with 10 catches for a career-high 183 yards.

LOUISVILLE 26, ILLINOIS 14

Illinois fell to 0-2 as Chris Redman completed touchdown pass plays of 63, 28 and 20 yards to Ibn Green to spark Louisville at Louisville, Ky.

Redman’s 20-yard strike to Green proved to be the game-winner, capping a 12-play, 98-yard drive that gave Louisville (1-2) a 20-14 lead with 3:57 remaining.

WISCONSIN 56, SAN JOSE STATE 10

Ron Dayne, who sat out last week with a pinched nerve in his neck and shoulder, ran 80 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and finished with 254 yards in 20 carries to lead the Badgers (2-1) over the Spartans (0-2) at San Jose.

“It was kind of interesting, we got in the huddle and we were in a good mood and we said, ‘OK, we’re going to break this one,”’ the 262-pounder said about his opening run. Dayne, who had 217 yards by halftime, also scored on five- and 23-yard runs.

INDIANA 33, BALL STATE 6

Jay Rodgers passed for five touchdowns and a school-record 408 yards at Bloomington, Ind., to lead Indiana (1-1) over Ball State (1-2) in the first football game between the schools.

Rodgers, a sophomore, completed 27 of 39 passes and topped the record of 390 yards set by Babe Laufenberg in 1990. Rodgers became the first Indiana quarterback to throw five touchdowns passes in a game since Tim Clifford against Colorado on Sept. 27, 1980.

MINNESOTA 53, IOWA STATE 29

Glen Mason got his first win at Minnesota in his first home game as Tutu Atwell set a school record with two kickoff returns for touchdowns. Atwell set up another touchdown with a long punt return and also had an eight-yard touchdown catch as the Golden Gophers (1-1) rallied to rout the Cyclones (0-3).

Iowa State, a 56-10 loser at Wyoming last week, has lost 10 in a row.
