They Came From Sticks to See Hicks

Skip Hicks ended up scrounging 49 tickets from teammates for family and friends, and at least that many more people drove the 4 1/2 hours from Wichita Falls, Texas, to Austin to see him back in his home state, playing for UCLA.

Hicks responded with 96 rushing yards in 22 carries, two pass receptions for 58 yards and three touchdowns.

He has scored nine touchdowns in UCLA’s three games, well ahead of the pace he needs to break his touchdown record of 20, set last season.

Hicks has scored 36 touchdowns and on Saturday moved to second in the school’s all-time list, behind only Gaston Green’s 40.

UCLA backup quarterback Drew Bennett said he wanted to join the “30-30-30 Club” and he got to Saturday, taking his first college snap in the fourth quarter.

Bennett handed off seven times on runs and missed his only pass.

His description of the “30-30-30 Club”: 30 points ahead or 30 points behind with 30 seconds to play.

Keith Brown rushed for 79 yards in 15 carries and scored a touchdown for UCLA. Brown had come into the game with four carries for losses totaling seven yards.

Linebacker Danjuan Magee on the effect of Coach Bob Toledo’s ending a miserable Wednesday practice early:

“Coach Toledo kicked us off [the practice field] and I think we deserved it. Thursday, we came out crisp. Friday, we came out here and walked around. Saturday, we kicked . . . “

“One guy starts going off [and making a turnover] and everybody wants to get some, you know? You get real greedy. You get stingy. You want to make plays too.”
