School Board to Create Armenian Education Panel
The Los Angeles Unified School District board has voted to create an Armenian Education Commission to represent the interests of its 15,000 Armenian students.
“This is a way for the district to get closer to the Armenian community,” board member Jeff Horton said Tuesday.
Horton said he had spoken to many Armenian community leaders in Hollywood who supported the idea. “The commission will act as an official link between the board and the community,” he said.
Tensions between Armenian and Latino students at schools in Hollywood and North Hollywood were one reason for establishing the commission, Horton said.
The district also has commissions for African Americans, Mexican Americans, Chinese Americans, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders. Each commission has a director with teaching experience, a secretary and 29 volunteers.
