Tiananmen Position Correct, Officials Say

Chinese Justice Minister Xiao Yang and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen said China will never reverse its condemnation of the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations for democracy, despite an appeal to party leaders by ousted Communist Party chief Zhao Ziyang. Qian confirmed in a meeting with American magazine editors that Zhao had sent an appeal to party leaders Friday, the opening day of the 15th Communist Party congress.
