It’s the end of summer, which means it’s time for Ventura’s 12th annual California Beach Festival.

The event will get underway this weekend down at the beachfront promenade.

The bands Jack Mack and the Heart Attack, Billy Vera and the Beaters, Little Charlie and the Nightcats and Acadiana will be belting out everything from blues to Cajun to party music.

The Longboard Surfing Competition will start at 6:30 a.m. both days. A volleyball tournament will also be held Saturday and Sunday west of the pier.

On Sunday, a 10K run is set for 8 a.m., a one-mile run/walk will start at 8:05 a.m. and a 5K run at 9:15 a.m. The longer races cost $20 to register; the run/walk costs $14. All participants get T-shirts.

The festival will feature such activities as pony rides, craft booths and visits with Bugs Bunny and his “Looney Tunes” friends from Six Flags Magic Mountain.

There will also be a classic-car show and a wide selection of food vendors.

The celebration begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors. Children under 12 are free.
