OCC Women Rally to Win in Water Polo

Orange Coast rallied late in the fourth quarter to beat Palomar, 8-6, in an Orange Empire Conference women’s water polo game Wednesday at Palomar.

Trailing, 6-5, in the fourth quarter, Morgan Meyer scored her second goal of the game to tie the score, 6-6. Jamie Smith then scored to give the Pirates a 7-6 lead.

Jackie Tran scored the final goal of the game for Orange Coast (6-1, 1-0). Karen Helm led the Pirates with three goals.

In South Coast Conference women’s water polo:

Long Beach City 13, Fullerton 9--Laura Marsh and Kerry Mortenson helped Long Beach City spoil the conference opener for Fullerton by scoring seven and four goals, respectively. The Hornets were tied going into the fourth quarter, when Long Beach City outscored Fullerton, 6-2, for the lead. Katherine Guidi led the Hornets with three goals.

In South Coast Conference men’s water polo:

Golden West 26, Cerritos 8--Ivan Varnjes scored four goals to lead Golden West in its conference opener. Robert Selleck, Mike Peetz and Drew Balandes scored three goals each for Golden West (9-0, 1-0).

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Santa Ana 3, San Diego Mesa 1--Nick Purdom scored 1 minute 38 seconds into the second half to give Santa Ana a 2-0 lead. Marco Silva added a goal later in the half.

Silva also scored a first-half goal for Santa Ana (6-0).

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Orange Coast 4, Palomar 0--Kelly Wilkins, Ema Ekblad, Heather Parsons and Meagan Waters scored for Orange Coast (4-2-2).

Santa Ana 2, East Los Angeles 1--East Los Angeles scored first on Erica Herrera’s goal four minutes into the game. Santa Ana’s Monica Martinez tied the score in the 41st minute and teammate Remi Amaro scored the winner in the 65th minute. Both of Santa Ana’s goals were unassisted.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Eastern Utah 3, Fullerton 0--Misty Rice led Fullerton in a losing effort with 11 kills as Eastern Utah swept the Hornets, 15-10, 15-8, 15-9. Megan Wimmer added eight kills and setter Karra Zamor had 17 assists for host Fullerton (0-2).
