DMV Wants ‘Lemon Law’ Ruling Upheld

The California Department of Motor Vehicles asked the Superior Court to uphold its “lemon law” ruling against Chrysler Corp. The ruling, which involved a 45-day moratorium on Chrysler shipments into the state, was overturned last month by the New Motor Vehicles Board. The DMV said the board erred because it considered the economic impact of dealers when it overturned the ruling. The department said the lemon law is designed to protect consumers, not dealers. The DMV says Chrysler resold 116 “lemons” between 1991 and 1992 without properly disclosing the vehicles’ repair history.
