Eldorado School May Get Claremont Pupils

Claremont High School, a 22-year-old academy that left its Huntington Beach campus this month amid financial troubles, is seeking to send some of its students and staff to another private school here, officials said Friday.

Donna Connelly, Claremont’s founder, said plans to open a reorganized version of the school in Long Beach next week fell through when she was unable to reach terms on a lease with a church there.

In its last term, Claremont had about 170 students from seventh through 12th grades.

Some of those students are now expected to apply for admission to the Eldorado School for the Gifted in Orange, Connelly and Eldorado administrator Glory Ludwick said. Eldorado now has about 180 students.

Ludwick said students who are admitted and have outstanding tuition paid to Claremont could be eligible for a credit of up to half a year. Some Claremont parents have asked for refunds, but the financial affairs of the closed school are in some turmoil.

Connelly and some of Claremont’s staff are expected to join the faculty at Eldorado, Ludwick said.

“I’m happy,” Connelly said. “After working 22 years in your own school, it’s kind of hard to give it up. I’m addicted to it.”
