More than 500 business leaders, residents and community volunteers attended a United Way rally Friday, at which the charitable organization announced its 1997-98 fund-raising goal of $19.1 million.

After the morning rally at the Nordstrom parking lot in Costa Mesa, leaders from some of Orange County’s largest companies toured several charities funded by the United Way.

“It was a chance for them to check their investments, see some of the agencies that their money is supporting,” spokesman Jeff Urbaniec said. “These folks represented over 8,000 employees that live and work here in Orange County, and companies that donate over $1.2 million a year.”

The companies, Urbaniec said, included Alcon Surgical, Automobile Club of Southern California, Fluor Corp., IBM Corp., Irvine Co., Nielson Co., Nelson Communications, Nordstrom, Steelcase Inc. and The Times Orange County.
