Venus Has to Be What Venus Has to Be

I was astounded when I read Diane MacFarland’s letter about Venus Williams [Sept. 13] and her bid for the U.S. Open championship. MacFarland must feel that there should be different rules for white players and black players.

Should Venus be humble like Martina Hingis, have quiet respect like John McEnroe, and be gracious like Thomas Muster? Or should she be herself, with the excitement of a 17-year-old, the enthusiasm of a gifted tennis player and intelligence beyond her years?

When you read some of the opinions in Viewpoint last week, it is hard to argue with Richard Williams that much of the controversy surrounding his daughter is tied to racism.

Diane MacFarland was giving some advice from the old guard, that if you’re black, there’s more money to be made in tennis if you conduct yourself in a quiet, low-key, professional manner.

Fortunately, all the Williamses really need to do is finish what they started. Bless the beads and the children.
