7-Year Term Sought in Trial of Kim’s Son

State prosecutors asked a Seoul court to jail President Kim Young Sam’s son for seven years on charges of bribery and tax evasion. Senior prosecutor Lee Hoon Kyu said the prosecution also wanted Kim Hyon Chol to pay $5.23 million in fines. The younger Kim has admitted accepting $3.6 million from two businessmen but denied the funds were bribes. His arrest in May and his trial have dealt a serious blow to his father’s credibility, already damaged by a scandal involving the Hanbo conglomerate.
