2 Israelis in Jordan Shot
Two Israeli Embassy security guards here in the Jordanian capital traded gunfire with assailants Monday. The Israelis were slightly wounded, and one man in the fleeing vehicle was hit.
Jordan’s King Hussein condemned the attack as “disgraceful” and visited the two Israelis in the hospital.
The two men, Yaacov Levine and Amikam Hadar, were attacked as they drove to work, Israeli Embassy spokesman Roey Gilad said. Israel’s ambassador, Oded Eran, said one man was hit above the knee and the other in the pelvis.
A previously unknown group calling itself the Islamic Resistance in Jordan claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, which could not immediately be authenticated, sent to Reuters news agency in Beirut.
Meanwhile Monday, Israeli soldiers in the West Bank closed down a mosque and a youth club run by the Islamic militant group Hamas and sealed several villages as part of their hunt for militants who plotted two recent suicide-bombing attacks in Jerusalem.
