Hazel R. Massey, a retired teacher with the Oxnard Elementary School District, died Saturday after a long illness. She was 88.

Massey was born Dec. 20, 1908, in Paris, Texas. She moved to California in 1935 and attended USC, California State Los Angeles and Santa Barbara State University. She married teacher Paul Massey, who died in 1985.

She taught elementary schoolchildren in Oxnard for 15 years. After she retired, Massey became a member of the California Retired Teachers Assn. She also belonged to the Oxnard First Presbyterian Church.

“She was a wonderful teacher and loved the children,” said Rita Tuttle, a longtime friend. The women would often meet for coffee and talk about teaching, Massey’s rose garden and her late husband.

“She adored him,” Tuttle said. “They had a happy marriage and a great relationship--she would call him her sweetie-heart when she spoke of him.”

A private service for Massey was held at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura. Arrangements were under the care of Ted Mayr Funeral Home.
