Heilbrunn on Helms

If Jacob Heilbrunn, in his criticism of Sen. Jesse Helms and the U.S. Senate (Opinion, Sept. 21), would have us believe that Everett M. Dirksen (deceased senator from Illinois) was a “Southern demagogue,” how trusting can we be concerning the accuracy of his other accusations? Heilbrunn obviously would prefer that there be just one philosophical outlook governing the Senate--and it would be his own. Sorry, but that’s not how America works.
