Edison Gets a Breather, Routs Westminster

Much as it did in the first two games of the season, the Edison offense rolled up points Friday night in a 35-0 victory over host Westminster.

The improvement for the Chargers (2-0-1) was in the defense. Edison, which gave up 21 and 30 points in its first two games, held the Lions (1-2) to 61 net yards in the shutout.

Westminster’s deepest penetration came midway through the second quarter, trailing 14-0. A 33-yard Erick Arthur punt return, with an Edison personal foul on the play, set the Lions up at the Edison 18. They proceeded to lose five yards on three plays and a 40-yard field goal attempt was partially blocked. Westminster never threatened again.

Meanwhile, Edison threatened almost constantly, building a 21-0 lead before halftime despite turning the ball over twice. Josh Kogler carried the ball six consecutive times on the opening drive of the game, the final one going for a five-yard touchdown.

They added two more scores in the second quarter, Kogler scoring on another five-yard run, then reserve tailback Darin Pope cruising up the middle virtually untouched on a 32-yard run for a 21-0 lead. Kogler finished the night with 116 yards and Pope had 111.

Two quick touchdowns in a 27-second span of the third quarter put the game on ice for the Chargers. Kogler found the end zone for the third time on a two-yard run, and a 33-yard interception return by Ryan Tritz set up a five-yard scoring pass from Jeff Grady to Jeff Hall. Grady accounted for 159 yards on 12-of-22 passing.
